Current Programmes and Activities of CEDVS
Currently CEDVS has been operating eleven (11) Skill/Trade Units which are highlighted below:
(i) Aquaculture Unit: The unit has ten concrete ponds and thirteen earthen ponds. The earthen ponds currently are stocked with cat fish and the Centre has been selling cat fish to Polytechnic Staff and Ado –Ekiti community.
Currently, the Centre has trained 907 students and 410 students are undergoing construction and management of both concrete and earthen fish ponds as shown in Tables 1 and 2. The Centre also on 21st January, 2013, in partnership with USAID through the Farmer-to Farmer Programme trained sixty five (65) staff on the production of Catfish Fingerling, and Hatchery Management. The training lasted twelve days, which the Polytechnic graciously sponsored. In addition, the Centre is in the process of excavating twenty (20) earthen ponds.
(ii) Apiculture Unit: The unit has sixty (60) bee-hives which are productive. The unit regularly sells pure honey to both Polytechnic Staff and Ado-Ekiti Community. The Centre has trained three hundred and five (305) students of the Polytechnic in Bee Keeping and honey production and are exposed to the various techniques associated with bee keeping management. One hundred and twenty (120) students are currently undergoing training in Bee Keeping and honey production as shown in Table 2.
The Centre in partnership with USAID also trained six (6) staff on honey processing, packaging, branding and marketing.
(iii) Snailery Unit: The unit has seven Snail Pens which are well stocked with snails. The Centre has trained two hundred and sixty six (266) students on Snailery Management. This includes the construction and management of Snail pens. Plans have reached advanced stage to add six pens to the unit. The unit sell snails regularly to the Polytechnic community.
(iv) Tie & Dye/Batik Unit: The Unit has trained six hundred and seventy (670) students while 292 students are currently undergoing training in the Tie & Dye/Batik unit. The unit regularly sells its product to the Polytechnic Community.
(v) Soap Production Unit: The unit has trained nine hundred and forty-four students (944) while 559 students are currently undergoing training in soap production. The unit regularly sells liquid soap to the Polytechnic Community. The unit intend to add other soap products.
(vi) Crop Production Unit: The unit has trained four hundred and sixty six students (466) in vegetable/plantain/horticulture production and management while 263 students are currently undergoing training in vegetable/plantain/horticulture. The unit regularly sells its product to the Polytechnic Community.
(vii) Simple Electrical Gadget Unit: The unit has trained four hundred and forty three (443) students while 261 students are currently undergoing training in the design and construction of simple electrical gadgets. The unit is involved in the production of extension box and solar hand-set charger.
(viii) Welding and Fabrication Unit: The unit has trained three hundred and thirty one (331) students while 110 students are currently undergoing training in the production of simple equipment.
(ix) Poultry Farming Unit: The unit has trained three hundred and eighty (380) students while 269 students are currently undergoing training in poultry farming management. The unit regularly sells turkey to Polytechnic Staff and Ekiti State Community. Plan has reached advanced stage to add five hundred layers in order to capture the egg market within the Polytechnic Community. The students will be exposed to management of layers. Quail brooding will be added in future.
(x) Bakery and Confectionery Unit. The unit has a standard bakery facility with experienced bakers. The unit sells bread of different sizes to the Polytechnic community. The unit has one hundred and forty (140) students currently undergoing training in Bakery and Confectionery. The student also produces pies and eggrolls.
(xi) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Unit. The unit is currently training students in two ICT areas which are; A+ Technician Training and Website Design and Development. The unit has one hundred and twenty five students currently undergoing training in the two areas mentioned above. The Unit has the projection of setting up full ICT business centre that will be providing ICT solutions to companies and organisations and also become a centre for conducting certification examination in core ICT areas.
